The accused was acquitted of rape at first instance, a charge which was ultimately not upheld on appeal. He was given a two year suspended sentence and was ordered to pay around €8,000 in damages to the victim.
The young woman had confirmed in court that she had not given her consent for a sexual relationship with the accused, while the latter claimed the opposite.
