Anti-smoking lawsAre you allowed to smoke behind the wheel in Luxembourg?

Luxembourg toughened its anti-smoking regulations back in 2017. With cigarettes remaining a bestseller in the Grand Duchy, here's a reminder of some of the key aspects of Luxembourg's anti-smoking laws.

One of the key changes to Luxembourg's smoking laws was to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 16 to 18. This change reflects the broader goal of the tighter restrictions that came into effect on 1 August 2017: one hopes to protect the health of non-smokers and children in particular.

For the same reason, it is illegal to smoke in public spaces such as playgrounds. Officials hoped that children will be less likely to start smoking later in life if they see fewer adults smoking.

Are you still allowed to smoke in your car?

You can still smoke behind the wheel as long as no children under 12 are inside the vehicle with you. The same law applies in France. By comparison, smoking in vehicles in England, Wales and several states in the US is illegal if passengers under 18 are in the car. Several other countries such as Greece and the Netherlands are planning on banning smoking in cars altogether.

On a side note, e-cigarettes are treated the same way as traditional tobacco products, which means that the same laws apply to vaping.

Luxembourg remains one of the countries with the cheapest tobacco prices in Europe. In 2018 alone, over 3 billion cigarettes were sold in the Grand Duchy.
