SEW and AMELUXAssociations advocate for valorisation of apprenticeships

According to teachers' union SEW and non-profit organisation AMELUX, apprenticeships have continuously lost in value in Luxembourg in recent years, which they intend to change with the help of a reform.

To ensure a valorisation of apprenticeships, three aspects need to be reformed, argue both organisations. For one, the duration of the ‘Professional Aptitude Diploma’ should be increased from three to four years. The first of those years should be completely held in schools while the rest is a mixture of theoretical and practical lessons.

A mandatory exam should also be held after the second year.

Both organisations further advocate for an equalisation between a master craftsman’s certificate and a Bachelor’s diploma, as they believe this would be an important incentive to increase the number of people opting for an artisanal career. Furthermore, technicians’ apprenticeships should also be reintegrated into secondary education, as it used to be the case.
