The Association of Christians for the Abolishment of Torture (ACAT) has made it its mission to raise awareness about wars unfolding on European territory. In cooperation with the Justice and Peace Commission Luxembourg, the Association organised a campaign to commemorate the victims of the war in Ukraine over the course of last week.

ACAT director Christina Fabian provided insight: “Truth and human rights are the first victims of war. It is therefore extremely important to continue informing the public and show solidarity with Ukrainians, in particular with the Ukrainian community in Luxembourg.”

Gertrud Casel from the Justice and Peace Commission advocated for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further harm from being done: “So much has already been destroyed. Hunger, poverty, and injustice have become so disastrous that we say a ceasefire is critical. And we believe that only with international support can Ukraine and Russia come together.”

Both organisations were also joined by a girl from Ukraine, who fled to Luxembourg together with her mother and younger sister: “I volunteer to help my country as much as possible, to show people that there is still a war happening, and that Ukraine still needs support in this fight.”

ACAT also used the opportunity to draw attention to the story of Maksym Butkevych, a Ukrainian journalist who was imprisoned by Russia. The organisations want to help him and others and hope to receive support from Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn.
