The signs bore messages such as "Democracy for Hong Kong" or "Fight for Freedom" alongside a Hong Kong flag.

The demonstration coincides with Hong Kong local elections. The turn out for this election is said to be higher than ever before: by the early evening, 56% of eligible voters had  cast their ballot.

This high turn out should prove positive for the pro-democracy movement, and demonstrations were halted to make voting more easily accessible.
The election results should not only provide a picture of the public attitude, but also whether or not they support the pro-democracy movement.

High turnout: Protests drive record poll turnout in Hong KongElsewhere, a number of marches in solidarity with Hong Kong protesters were organised in cities in the UK.
