The new sorting mechanism has been on trial for the past two years. 46 municipalities have participated in the testing phase, and the respective evaluation has shown that 37% more plastic were recovered. If applied across the entire Grand Duchy, the inclusion would thereby create an additional 4,000 tons of plastic. At the same time, there remain about 13% of plastic packages that cannot (yet) be recycled in Europe.
The monitoring of the situation will continue despite the rather positive statistics, said Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Carole Dieschbourg. She further underlined that they only consider to slightly widen the grasp of the blue bags, but not create an option where any plastic can be thrown away, as is the case in Germany, for instance. The Minister explained that reports show that this method leads to less efficient recycling procedures.
Although there are still a number of administrative steps to take, officials are optimistic about announcing the change in the not too distant future.
