Chamber of DeputiesBudgetary control commission to reassess its real estate strategy

The reevaluation comes in light of the failed project around the planned dairy factory by Greek company Fage.

The government initially sold the fifteen-hectare site for €30 million. After it became clear that the project would not go through, the land was repurchased at the initial selling price. In the wake of the events, blame was partially put on former Minister of the Economy Etienne Schneider, who was in office when the deal was made.

Comparable debacles are to be avoided in the future, which is why Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot is currently working on a draft law to better regulate the problem areas.

MP Diane Adehm from the Christian Social People's Party also explained that, in the future, the acquisition committee will be more rigorous in its assessments. This means that the State Council will have to approve any real estate deals.

Furthermore, the acquisition committee wants to establish an overview of real estate values across the country to better prepare for eventual purchases and sales.

MP Sven Clement from the Pirate Party argued that in cases where the government decides to sell land, a special task force with experienced people needs to be put into place: "It has become obvious that the acquisition committee needs support, both in legal and regulatory senses."
