The roadworks are due to end by the end of April or beginning of May at the latest, allowing those sharing vehicles to benefit from a special lane.

Cars with at least two additional passengers will be permitted to use the additional lane on the E411 between Arlon and the Luxembourgish border in the event of traffic jams. Whilst the speed limit will remain 50 kilometres per hour, carsharers can then use the emergency lane. According to Sudpresse, this information was announced by the Wallonian Minister for Transport.

The stretch of the road will also see cameras installed that will verify number plates and that cars using the emergency lane for car sharing purposes have the required amount of passengers.

In order for the emergency lane to be successfully used as a carsharing lane, the roadworks have included the construction of 20 run-off areas along the stretch of the E411. These areas of 150 metres are there for vehicles experiencing issues to have somewhere to stop without impacting the remaining traffic on the car sharing lane.

The 11 kilometre stretch should be open to car sharing by the end of April of beginning of May. The Belgian authorities will then begin to start a similar project between Wavre and Brussels.

The Luxembourgish authorities had previously discussed a similar initiative in 2017. Then-minister François Bausch announced testing to use emergency lanes as carsharing lanes. The pilot project will take place on the A6 motorway, which connects with the Belgian E411 route. The minister had also expressed a willingness to test carsharing on other roads.
