The current and continuing state of total uncertainty surrounding Brexit has led to a number of different positions taken by those who stand to be affected. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have largely decided to wait and see what happens.

The director of the Chamber of Commerce, Carlo Thelen, understood why SMEs have taken this approach, as preparing time and money into measures that may not be necessary would affect them significantly.

However, he explained that the chamber is concerned at the consequences Brexit could have on these smaller businesses and urged them to begin preparations. If they have customers or suppliers based in the United Kingdom, they could be substantially affected. He also explained that SMEs need to research the impact of customs on their markets. If these costs become too high, they may need to consider no longer exporting to the UK and seeking out different markets instead.

Thelen stressed the need for SMEs to prepare, as ultimately they will be the ones to feel the effects of Brexit rather than larger businesses.
