This year sees a special holiday for many Luxembourg-based families who want to return home. Four flights to Porto and two to Lisbon left Luxembourg airport on Friday, compared to ten a day before the pandemic.

Portugal, which has been plagued by the Delta variant for several weeks, is now doing a little better with fewer infections and more people being vaccinated. A relaxation of restrictions is even planned for Sunday with the end of the curfew and the opening of shops and restaurants until 2 am.

But despite the reassuring news, many workers will have to stay in Luxembourg. This year, 148 derogations have been validated in order to continue working during the collective holiday. 47 of these were for the construction of schools in the Grand Duchy, 22 for factories that are closed, and 79 for urgent building sites.

This situation has revived the discussion about collective leave and its raison d'être. This tradition, which has been in place since the 1970s in Luxembourg, is no longer always well received by some families who would like to have more flexibility in travel.
