Military aircraftCurrently no plans to use A400M to extinguish forest fires, says Minister of Defence

With the right equipment, the Belgo-Luxembourgish military plane can be used to put out forest fires from above.

Earlier this year, Spain successfully used A400Ms to combat wildfires. During these interventions, 20 tonnes of water can be dropped within ten seconds.

In his reply to a parliamentary question by MP Fernand Kartheiser from the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr), Minister of Defence François Bausch confirmed that Luxembourg’s A400M could also potentially be used in interventions against large forest fires.

While the Minister stated that Luxembourg has no plans to purchase such a kit with Belgium at this time, Bausch added that because climate change is increasing the likelihood of forest fires, the two countries may eventually decide to use the A400M to extinguish fires.

The French authorities are currently using Canadair aircraft, which can drop thousands of litres of water in ten seconds, to combat forest fires in the south of France.
