The crash occurred at around 11am on the road between Garnich and Windhof, not far from the Belgian border.
The car skidded off the road into the woods after missing a corner, hitting four trees in the process and ending up on its side. The driver was severely injured and emergency services personnel attending to the crash had to cut him out of the vehicle. He was then urgently transported to the closest hospital.
At midday, the road remained closed to all traffic.
