As Luxembourg faces increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, the General Federation of Local Government (FGFC) has called for immediate and permanent rules to better protect municipal employees from extreme heat. In a statement published on Tuesday afternoon, the FGFC stressed that high temperatures do not stop at office doors and argued that action must be taken now to ensure workplaces can better withstand future heatwaves.

Among its demands, the FGFC is calling for additional breaks for staff when temperatures rise, the implementation of heat action plans with clear rules and structures, as well as defined protective measures to be triggered once certain indoor temperatures are reached. The union emphasised that these steps are needed to ensure both the health and wellbeing of municipal staff as climate change continues to fuel more frequent and severe periods of extreme heat.
