Luxembourg rail authorities have recorded 13 incidents involving pedestrians illegally crossing railway tracks between 2015 and 2025. The phenomenon of people running across the rails to reach the other side is reportedly on the rise, according to personnel from the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL). The highest number of such crossings last year occurred in Pétange and Rodange, according to the government’s response to a parliamentary question from Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) MPs Yves Cruchten and Claire Delcourt, provided by Minister for Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes of the Democratic Party (DP).

In response to these risks, the state is continuing with redevelopment projects aimed at eliminating dangerous spots, especially by removing level crossings, such as in Dommeldange.

Currently, there is no legal basis for implementing video surveillance on the railway network, Minister Backes stated. There is also no data available regarding any fines or police reports issued in this context. The ministry’s general approach is to prioritise prevention over punitive action, with specific initiatives to raise awareness about railway safety in schools.
