Individuals purchasing an electric vehicle with an energy consumption lower than 18 kWh/100km may receive a government subsidy of €8,000. Less energy-efficient cars are still eligible for a €3,000 support package.
To take into account the needs of large families, a bonus of €8,000 will be allocated for cars with 7 or more seats regardless of their electrical energy consumption, provided that the applicant for assistance is part of a household of at least 5 people. For 100% electric vans, the amount of the premium remains unchanged at €8,000. The same is true for hydrogen fuel cell cars and vans.
For so-called "plug-in" rechargeable hybrid electric cars and vans, financial assistance amounts to €1,500. In accordance with the guidelines adopted by the government as part of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, the premium only applies to vehicles purchased and put into service for the first time between 1 April and 31 December, 2021.
For other 100% electric vehicles (quadricycles, motorcycles and mopeds), the amounts of financial aid (50% of the cost excluding value-added tax of the vehicle, without exceeding €1,000), remain unchanged.
These new provisions will apply to vehicles ordered between 1 April, 2021 and 31 March, 2022 and whose registration takes place before the end of 2022, in order to take into account delivery times.
In 2019, electric and hybrid vehicles made up 3,5% of total car registrations within the Grand Duchy. In 2020, this figure climbed to 11,4%. There were 2,473 electric vehicles in Luxembourg in 2019, and 2,685 hybrid vehicles.
