Sacred buildingsFurniture from deconsecrated churches is not being auctioned off, assure Ministers

RTL Today
Minister of Culture Sam Tanson and Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding stated that they are not aware of any auctions where furniture from deconsecrated churches or chapels has been put up for sale by the Management Fund for Sacred Buildings.

The Ministers made this clarification in response to a parliamentary question by MP André Bauler from the Democratic Party (DP), who stated that he had heard about such auctions.

The risk would be that the movable heritage of deconsecrated churches and chapels would simply disappear.

Tanson and Bofferding therefore assured the MP that they were not aware of any such sales and stressed that the interiors of 21 churches are currently protected.

In fact, the current legislation on the protection of sites and monuments provides that elements of the furnishings of religious buildings, such as statues or bells, can be classified as "national monuments".

In the future, more churches and their furnishings will be protected, according to the Ministers.
