The municipality of Goesdorf announced on social media that it is now forbidden to ride "electric scooters, quads and other motorised vehicles (MVE) in schoolyards, playgrounds or similar public places".
The decision, however, did not come out of the blue, as Mayor Jean-Paul Mathay confirmed to RTL. In recent weeks, young people had repeatedly been riding electric scooters, and at times even quads, through the schoolyard and across the playgrounds. They were driving at a relatively fast speed, and the vehicles appeared to have all been modified, tuned to travel faster than the law allows.
That, in turn, had led to an array of dangerous situations. In one recent case, children from the Maison Relais were out walking in the yard while several individuals were riding their electric vehicles through the schoolyard, and doing so far too fast. Fortunately, no incident transpired.
The Goesdorf authorities decided they could no longer let the situation remain unaddressed, and wanted to firmly guarantee the safety of the children. The decision was therefore taken that MVEs, but also larger motorised vehicles such as quad bikes, would no longer be allowed in those areas.
It is, the municipality wrote on social media, an important measure to prevent accidents and to reinforce safety.
