Klaus Regling, who has been the ESM Managing Director for the past ten years, is set leave office in October. The ESM, which is based in Kirchberg, provides loans and support to Euro countries in financial trouble, and was set up jointly by EU member states.
Yesterday, RTL Today reported that Luxembourg’s former Minister of Finance Pierre Gramegna from the Democratic Party (DP) expressed interest in the position. The politician has since confirmed that he applied for the position, while the government issued a statement of support for the former minister.
In fact, it was Gramegna’s successor, Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes, who forwarded the official application of her party colleague to President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe. The latter conveyed on Twitter that he also received candidacies from Italy’s Marco Buti, Portugal’s João Leão, and Menno Snel from the Netherlands.
EU Finance Ministers will convene on 23 May to designate Regling’s successor as Managing Director of the European Stability Mechanism.
