Grand Duke Henri noted how Queen Elizabeth II had reigned as monarch for three generations and had become queen before he was born.
He described her passing as a “loss” for himself and for Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.
He shared his memories of Queen Elizabeth as a “very sweet and adorable lady”, who he described as “very impressive, with a lot of charm and a lot of empathy towards people”.
In further comments to RTL, the former - and first female - mayor of Luxembourg City, Colette Flesch, shared her memories of Queen Elizabeth’s state visit to the Grand Duchy in 1976.
Flesch recalled the “great joy and happiness” which she felt on the occasion of the visit. She noted the queen’s visit was particularly “exceptional” given Britain’s role in liberating Luxembourg during the Second World War.
The Grand Duke’s father Jean was also intimately connected with the UK, having served in the British army’s Irish Guards.
Flesch said the monarch was “easy to talk to” and “showed an interest in many things”.
