The picturesque town of Vianden along the Our river showed two faces on Friday. On one side, the tourist hotspot had terraces filled with customers enjoying the start of the summer; while on the other side, residents frantically worked to rescue their belongings and restore their homes after Thursday's violent floods.

The Our river levels were still 1.8 metres over their normal level on Friday. However, Luc Reinig from the SEO explained this was still 2.5 times less than Thursday's peak.

The Grand Duke visited the worst-affected zones on Friday and spoke at length with residents about their experiences as they tackled the monumental clean-up efforts ahead of them.

Tons of debris have piled up at the dam not far from the town. The SEO teams must now work to clear huge amounts of wood, plastic and mud which could affect the hydro-plant's machinery.

Drone images also revealed caravans which had been swept away by the currents. Their owners had been rescued from a German campsite in the early hours of Thursday.
