Military base protestGreen Party divided in reactions to MEP Tilly Metz's protest

RTL Today
Whilst fellow MEP Christophe Hansen was quick to condemn Tilly Metz's actions following her arrest at a Belgian military base, reactions within her own party remain divided.

The Green MEP was arrested alongside other MEPs and peace activists for breaking into a Belgian military base as a protest against nuclear weapons in Europe.

The MEP's actions certainly caused discomfort in her party: while some of the Green Party members in Luxembourg support her, others have been reluctant. Francois Bausch, the minister of defence, did not comment officially on the issue on Thursday.

He did, however, tell the Tageblatt on Wednesday that the topic of nuclear weapons in Europe is certainly one that must be discussed, but he fundamentally disagreed with going against the law in trying to broach the issue. Bausch was not pleased that the MEP broke into military territory, highlighting that MEPs do not have any special status.

Upon RTL inquiry, party president Christian Kmiotek's only response was "No comment." Metz's actions appear to have surprised the party leadership, indicating that the protest was clearly organised in Brussels.

Tilly Metz continues to defend her actions, claiming the minister's response was understandable in light of his government mandate.

The MEP did receive support from one member of the party - Djuna Bernard, candidate for the party co-presidency. Bernard took to Facebook to applaud Tilly Metz, claiming the MEP has made an important move against the use of nuclear weapons and has demonstrated the importance of political courage.
