Initiative "Duty of Care"Health crisis shines spotlight on the fragility of supply chains

The challenges of supplying masks and further protective gear proves that a restructuring of supply chains is required.

Seventeen organisations have come together to address the current situation, among those Caritas, Fairtrade, and OGBL.

According to their joint statement, the pandemic has shown that Luxembourg's supply chains are lacking stability and transparency. It would be in everybody's interest to reconsider the ways of managing necessary resources.

Jean-Louis Zeien speaks for the initiative: "We need to learn the correct lessons from this crisis. We highly welcome the government's strong support since the beginning of the outbreak. But we have to think even farther. Our supply chains need to be restructured, for which we need adequate legislation."

Zeien also emphasised that especially within the European Union, one should reconsider increasing the amount of necessary goods produced on the continent's territory. Nonetheless, he also acknowledged that this could not be done in opposition to the forces of a globalised market.

The initiative "Duty of Care" sees an opportunity in the crisis to reorient the EU to a better future.
