A parliamentary question from MP Mars di Bartolomeo of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) has shed light on the measures taken during Luxembourg's June heatwave.

The intense heat has since passed, but in mid-June authorities issued a red heat alert after temperatures climbed above 40°C.

Since 2015, such an alert has only been issued four times because of extreme heat, according to Health Minister Martine Deprez's response to the parliamentary question.

This year, 436 people signed up to a special programme allowing authorities to check on them during the heatwave. The government had encouraged people aged over 75 who live alone to register for the scheme, Deprez stated.

Registrations rose sharply compared with the previous two years, from 211 in 2024 and 199 in 2025 to 436 in 2026. Deprez said the increase followed an update to the database used for information campaigns and came amid unusually early spells of hot weather beginning in May.

During the red alert from 18 to 29 June, at least 436 interventions were carried out each day, resulting in more than 4,700 contacts overall, according to Deprez. Depending on individual needs, support could include telephone calls, one or more home visits or, where necessary, transfer to hospital.

Deprez also explained that the government is considering extending the scheme to other vulnerable groups, including people with severe chronic illnesses, people with disabilities, and those experiencing social isolation.
