If a wolf is shot during a hunt, the responsible hunter must expect a fine between 250 and €750,000, a potential prison sentence between eight days and six months, and the withdrawal of their hunting licence, as stipulated by the law on hunting.

In Luxembourg, the wolf is a fully protected species, which means that if a human harms or kills such an animal, it represents a violation of the environmental protection law.

If a motorist runs over a wolf with their vehicle, the police or the local forester have to be informed. A seriously injured animal should also be treated as best as possible, as Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg explained in her reply to a parliamentary question by MP Marc Goergen from the Pirate Party.

The return of the wolf, which has been spotted several times in Luxembourg in recent years, will also be discussed during a presentation in the context of the World Wildlife Day, which will take place next week in Wincrange, where a wolf was spotted and photographed in early January.

There is, however, no official report on deaths of protected animal species. The fox, for instance, is a normal game species without a set hunting season, which is why there are no specific data on dead foxes.
