Slime dangerInstitute in charge of toy security warns against toxic slime

Whilst children may love slime as a toy, the Luxembourg Institute of Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services (ILNAS) has warned that certain varieties of slime could be a health risk.

On Monday, ILNAS published a press release warning against the dangers of some "slime" products sold in Luxembourg. The press release warns that some slime that children play with could potentially be toxic.

The institute explained that it is still conducting tests on other types of slime, but warned that those tested as toxic have a strong presence of the chemical element boron.

This in turn could provoke allergies as well as eye and mucous irritations when the slime is handled regularly. If ingested, the slime could cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and cramps, as well as affect the liver, pancreas, and kidneys.

A long-term effect of boron can cause fertility issues and affect the development of a foetus if the slime is handled by a pregnant woman.

For more information on the types of slime believed to be toxic, ILNAS has a website with alerts (in French).
