On 2 January, a two-year-old boy was killed by his father, who deliberately drove into a group of people including the toddler's mother and other family. The entire incident happened metres away from the hospital in Wiltz on Rue Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. The entire group of pedestrians were injured when the 47-year-old man drove into the group.
The group including the man's ex-partner and their child Calvin, alongside other family members. The two-year-old died as a result of his injuries, and the remainder of the group was all injured, with some suffering serious injuries.
The Luxembourgish man was immediately arrested and placed in provisional detention. Not long after, he was accused of premeditated murder, intentional homicide, and wilful assault causing death and aggravated injuries. The first charge alone is punishable by a life sentence in prison.
On Friday, the Diekirch public prosecutor's office confirmed the suspect remained in provisional detention and more than ten expert assessments were requested by the investigating judge. One of those assessments remains ongoing, but the judiciary expects the investigation to conclude in the next few months. Once concluded, the public prosecutor's office will then determine whether enough evidence stands to prosecute the suspect.
