The 72-year-old Minister of Foreign and European Affairs chose the starting location of his cycling tour for its symbolic value.

"Ten out of 26 EU states continue to impose restrictions at their borders and interfere with the free circulation of citizens", Minister Asselborn underlined before making his departure.

"Free circulation continues to disappear gradually, and if the European Commission, guardian of those agreements, fails to intervene, the next generations will grow up with a deformed Schengen treaty, where restrictions are the status quo and free circulation the exception", the LSAP politician further warned.

From Schengen, Minister Asselborn to Metz and then Nancy, the final stop of his first stage. He intends to complete fifteen stages in total, which span over 1,200 kilometres along the Moselle, the Meurthe, the Canal de la Meuse, the Saône, as well as the Rhône. The grand finale of his tour will be the ascent to the top of Mont Ventoux, a regular highlight of the annual Tour de France.

Minister Asselborn shared a detailed overview of his travels and motivations via Facebook on Sunday.

Having been Luxembourg's foreign representative since 2004, Minister Asselborn is known for his frank approach to politics and strong support of the European Union and its values.
