On Tuesday, the Leudelange municipal council had a vote, which was, above all, a formality. The council unanimously passed the motion to hold a non-binding referendum on the question "Do you want the municipality of Leudelange to switch to the central constituency?".
464 residents who are eligible to vote in municipal elections signed a request to hold a citizens ballot on the issue. The initiative to change constituencies was brought to life by the opposition within the municipal council. They regrouped under the umbrella slogan "Zesumme fir Leideleng" (Together for Leudelange).
In order to request a referendum, a quarter of the municipality's residents who are eligible to vote in municipal elections must sign the request. The request required 355 signatures and a total of 464 were collected.
If the vote ended in favour of switching, Leudelange would join Kopstal in campaigning for a constituency change. However, the decision lays with the Chamber of Deputies, according to the Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding. The MPs must verify that the constituency change does not require an amendment to the constitution.
