Yoghurt pots, plastic flower pots, foils, plastic film, ... These are some of the new waste products that can be thrown into the blue Valorlux bag from 1 July. No new bags are needed, the old ones are simply taken along with the new products.

Up to now, there has been a test project in 46 municipalities, but this system will now be adopted virtually throughout the country. New conventions would have to be signed with the municipalities, explained Claude Turping, director of Valorlux.

The system could have been changed relatively quickly; so far 97% of the municipalities have signed the new conventions.

On the Valorlux website, there is a list of the municipalities that have signed up, and it is constantly updated. There was no definite 'no' from the municipalities that had not yet signed the conventions. It was mostly due to administrative procedures, says Claude Turping.

The pilot project showed that 37 percent more packaging is collected with the expanded blue bag. Projected for the whole country, this should amount to 4,000 tonnes.

However, various types of packaging are to remain taboo. For one thing, they are not recognisable by the machine and are then rejected for incineration. Examples of such products are the complex materials, chip bags, which consist of plastic and metal and therefore cannot be recycled.

Upon request, the municipalities of Differdange and Esch have informed us that they have already made the extended blue bag available to their residents in the context of the test project.

In Dudelange, the municipal council gave its approval in principle to the new system on 7 May. Accordingly, nothing stands in the way of the new system here either.

On Friday, the city of Luxembourg also announced that its citizens could benefit from the extended service.
