The event was held at the ‘Hinzerter Kräiz’ (‘Hinzerter Cross’) in Luxembourg City.
Centre of this year’s ceremony was the general strike organised in Luxembourg 80 years ago. At the end of August in 1942, people from across the Grand Duchy went on a strike, which the Nazi occupiers punished by executing 21 Luxembourgers. 20 of them died at the Hinzert concentration camp.
An estimated 10,000 people from 20 different countries were imprisoned in Hinzert during World War II. 321 individuals, including 82 Luxembourgers, were either executed or died due to negligence in the camp.
