Luxembourgish conductor and musician Pierre Cao has died at the age of 88, the Ministry of Culture announced on Thursday.

Luxembourg's cultural scene has lost one of its most important figures in the field of choral and orchestral conducting. Cao, who was originally from Dudelange, left his mark on the country's music scene over several decades.

From 1964 onwards, he was involved with the RTL Orchestra, based at Villa Louvigny, for 10 years. He also founded the Luxembourg-based European Institute for Choral Singing (INECC).

Even after his official retirement, Cao regularly returned to conduct on special occasions, including National Day concerts at the Philharmonie.

In 2022, the Ministry of Culture awarded Cao the National Music Prize.

Minister for Culture Eric Thill reacted to the news on Facebook, writing that Cao had left a decisive mark on Luxembourg's musical landscape over the course of his career.
