Austrian police said, on Monday, that a 32-year-old Luxembourger was caught attempting to use counterfeit banknotes in Ischgl, leading to the discovery of over €1,500 in fake currency.

A 32-year-old Luxembourger was caught using counterfeit money in Ischgl, Austria, a popular winter holiday destination among many Luxembourgish holidaymakers.

On Sunday evening a man attempted to pay his bill using fake banknotes, Austrian police intervened with a search revealing he was carrying €300 in counterfeit €50 notes.

Following the incident, the prosecutor’s office ordered a search of his holiday residence, which confirmed suspicions – authorities discovered an additional €1,250 in fake €50 banknotes.

The suspect has reportedly admitted to the offences. The investigation remains ongoing, and he will face legal proceedings before Austrian courts.
