Criticism from Déi LénkLuxembourg's army could be deployed more easily

The Chamber Commission for internal security will be debating the corresponding draft law on Thursday afternoon.

The current law limits the participation of Luxembourg's army in international peace missions, such as those organised by NATO or the UN. The government now wants to change this through draft law 7325, which would allow the involvement of the army in further of military interventions, say déi Lenk (The Left).

The Chamber Commission for internal security will be debating the corresponding draft law on Thursday afternoon. With this reform, the government could send the army on crisis missions in the context of bilateral co-operations. A mandate from the UN or other institutions would no longer be required.

MP for déi Lenk, Marc Baum, explains that in this case the Luxembourgish military, in cooperation with another country, would be able to intervene anywhere in the world where signs of risk or instability could be seen. This would open the possibility to deploy the army anywhere with one or two partners. Mechanisms to democratically observe and control these interventions would thus be minimised.

Déi Lenk emphasise that, with this draft bill, the government would be introducing a dangerous change in its foreign policy. Déi Lenk perceive this paradigm change as particularly problematic, given the instability of an international context marked by heavy militarisation.
