AgriMeteo, the meteorological section of the Administration of Agricultural Technical Services (ASTA), recently published its spring analysis for the year 2022, which spans from the beginning of March until the end of May.

March: elevated temperatures and rain deficits

During the month of March, authorities registered warmer temperatures than in the period of reference, with maximum gaps of +1°C in Asselborn.

In terms of rain, the month was considered too dry in all parts of the Grand Duchy, with a maximum rain deficit of 36 millimetres in Clemency.

April: too cold and too dry

With temperatures ranging between 7.5°C and 9.6°C, the month of April was colder than the reference average of the rest of the country. Meteorological stations continued registering rain deficits in almost every part of Luxembourg, with the exception of Remich.

May: too hot and too dry

The month of May was too hot, with temperatures ranging between 13.3°C and 16°C. Aside from some storm-related precipitation, which benefited agriculture, the rest of the month remained relatively dry.

Winter barley and rapeseed suffered little damage from the drought, but winter wheat was severely affected. Fields may still recover from these damages if the coming weeks experience rain more regularly. Corn benefited from the heat during the month of May, but summer grains were heavily spoiled by the dry climate.

Fruit plantations were affected by frost in late April, which caused limited damages, particularly affecting blooming pear trees.
