As we reported last week, many motorists did not follow the speed limit, resulting in an alleged 5,000 drivers being fined for speeding in the first 48 hours. The police did not confirm the number upon inquiry.

The storm of speeding tickets led to a number of comments on RTL.lu, with many asking whether the speed limit of the temporary radar had been set correctly. Mainly, commenters were puzzled at the reduced speed limit of 70 km/h.

As it appears the radar was placed at the construction from one moment to the next, many wondered whether the speed limit had been gradually lowered from 130 km/h to 70 km/h or whether the limit is simply for the times when the construction site is active.

Some dedicated users even cited the document 'Construction site signalling' (Signalisation des chantiers), as established by the State traffic commission. The bridges and roads authority also referred back to the document upon inquiry. The document indeed confirms that motorway speed limits must be adjusted to 70 km/h when a construction site is underway (See below image).
