Although residents of the Schengen and Remich area are probably among those most used to floods in Luxembourg, they seem to have been spared from the worst this time.

Nevertheless, the water levels of the Moselle have been climbing as of Saturday.

Out of precaution, the municipality of Schengen issued an appeal to people to bring their motorised vehicles to safety. Later that same morning, the road alongside the river had to be closed off due to rising water levels. Fortunately, the situation began stabilising  in the afternoon.

Markus Biewer from the water and shipping administration in Saarbrücken commented: "We expect that water lines will remain stable and start going down again in the next couple of hours."

Residents also shared their thoughts on the situation:

"I think we are all used to it here, and given that the Moselle is the last river to climb, people are not really panicking."

"Every time the river climbs, you have this little fear that it might end in a catastrophe."

Jean-Paul Lickes from the Water Management Authority explained: "The Moselle might still slowly climb until Sunday afternoon, but then it will go down."
