
Officials noted that they did everything in their power to ensure that nobody has died in complete solitude since the beginning of the pandemic. Not only is it devastating for a person to die alone, it can also significantly affect the emotional state of the loved-one not able to be present, representatives further noted.
Due to the increased need for support, staff had to be increased. A total of 56 employees and 79 volunteers have worked for Omega 90 over the past year and accompanied people on the brink of death. More than 4,500 consultations were made, including with concerned family members.
A lot of younger families chose to consult the services of Omega 90, especially individuals that infected one of their relatives with Covid-19.
At times, the organisation had trouble fulfilling the requests, given that their volunteers are classified as normal visitors in hospitals, and were thus limited in terms of access. Officials hope that the status can be changed in the future.
Over the coming months, regular support groups with up to eight members will be organised to help mourn personal losses. Officials hope that their work can eventually help ease pressure from psychologists in the long run.
