Ministry of Family and IntegrationOGBL says child benefit re-indexation is "not sufficient"

In a press release, the OGBL (Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation) said that linking child benefits to indexation in 2022 would fall short of compensating value for families over the last 15 years.

Minister of Families and Integration Corinne Cahen announced in December 2020 that the re-indexation of child benefits would take place from 1 January 2022. The practice had been abolished in 2006.

The union has called for a 7.7% improvement in the family allowance, mainly because the risk of poverty has risen further and the pandemic has hit low-income households in particular. The OGBL said it fears that the announced re-indexation next year could be misleading, as it does not change the fact there has been no increase to child benefit in 15 years.

The union said the government had declined to respond to their previous calls for a rise in child benefit.
