On Thursday 15 July 2021, the town was hit by early morning flooding, as the Sûre river burst its banks following a short burst of extremely heavy rainfall. The streets of Echternach filled with water, reaching heights of two metres in places. People were evacuated from their homes, losing their possessions and livelihoods in the space of mere hours.
The historical parkland around Echernach also succumbed to the flood, suffering damage despite the municipality’s best attempts to act quickly. The Ministry of Culture has since commissioned a study designed to restore and preserve the gardens and pavilion, which date back to the 18th century.
