However, the distress of people in Pétange and Käerjeng also triggered a massive wave of support.

Over €1 million in donations were raised in total. A monitoring committee was put in place in order to decide how the donations should be distributed. This committee consists of officials from both municipalities, Caritas, the Red Cross, the association "Käerjeng hëlleft" ("Käerjeng helps", which was founded after the tornado), and representatives from the social offices of both municipalities.

Donations are to be distributed to those who are less financially stable and have to repair damage which is not covered by insurance companies or the Ministry of Family Affairs. People could submit their requests at the social offices until 31 May.

According to the monitoring committee, requests for a total of €1,680,057 were submitted in order to receive support for the repair of houses, cars, motorcycles, or graves. This is about €500,000 more than relief organisations collected through donations. 4 criteria have been stipulated in order to decide how much money each applicant would receive.

Up to 70% of the costs for houses will be covered with a ceiling of €50,000. 50% of costs for cars and motorcycles with a ceiling of €10,000 and 70% for grave reparations. Each request under €1,000 will also be granted.

The monitoring committee stated that those whose documents were complete would receive the funds immediately.

Social offices will contact those who still have to submit certain documents. The total amount of funds for these requests is expected to be €915,874.97.

The remaining funds will be saved for those people who submitted a request but still have to wait for a quotation.
