Emergency services were called to Mertert port around midnight after a large pile of scrap metal caught fire, leading authorities to issue a public alert via the LU-Alert system. Given the difficulty in extinguishing scrap fires and the risk that smoke from such blazes can be toxic, local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.
Fire crews from Mertert, Flaxweiler, Hesperange, Manternach, and Luxembourg City responded to the scene, alongside a specialised unit from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) trained to handle hazardous substances.
By early morning, Mertert Mayor Jérôme Laurent confirmed in response to media queries that the fire had been extinguished.
Meanwhile, three people were injured in separate road accidents across Luxembourg on Thursday evening.
In Leudelange, two cars collided at around 6pm, leaving two individuals injured and requiring intervention from the emergency medical service (SAMU) from Luxembourg City. At roughly the same time in Bettembourg, a car and a lorry were involved in a crash, resulting in one person being injured.
