Luxembourg City's mayor, Lydie Polfer, emphasised that the development project could only improve the neighbourhood.

The City Council held a meeting on Monday, during which one of the topics up for debate was the Dernier Sol neighbourhood, which is located between the swimming pool in Bonnevoie and Pont Büchler.

Part of the neighbourhood is set to be demolished and make way for some 200 homes, shops and offices.

Members of the council agreed that this would give the neighbourhood, which is often frequented by homeless people and drug addicts, a new image.

The project also includes a new and probably quiet road, so DP member Tanja De Jager emphasised the importance of a well designed road layout.

More and more residents in the area erect fences to keep people off their land.

It is not only private land that is often strewn with litter but busy residential streets are often dirtied by those who hang out on them.

De Jager acknowledged that Stëmm vun der Strooss was making efforts to combat this problem, but added that much still needed to be done. She described the project as a good way to improve the look and 'feel' of the neighbourhood.

The partial development plan at Dernier Sol was accepted through the votes of the DP and CSV.

From swim pool to carpool

A further topic at the meeting on Monday was the Carsharing-Service, Carloh.

As the €1.5 million initial capital had been used up much more quickly than planned, the council agreed to a capital increase of €2.86 million.

The original budget of €1.5 million had been calculated to last ten years, but it was taken up swiftly.

Every year, operational costs range from €500,000 to €600,000.

There are also plans to extend the system, however, there are currently 630 subscribers.

This number is estimated to rise to somewhere in the region of 3,000.

In addition, more companies will be encouraged to benefit from Carloh scheme in the future and to kickstart this, the number of cars in the fleet will be increased from 17 to 52.
