MerschPlans for a new school campus

RTL Today
The local council agreed to preliminary plans early this week, with expected costs of 50 million euros.

The primary school will remain at the same location as before, closely behind the municipal building and the daycare facility.

Michel Malherbe, mayor of Mersch, listed the campus' new additions in an RTL interview: "20 class rooms, six more rooms for additional courses, six technical workshops, six theme rooms, one conference room, one assembly hall, one gymnasium, one swimming pool, an underground parking."

The municipality plans to start tearing own the old building at the end of the academic year. Malherbe further explained that no containers would be needed to bridge the time gap before the opening of the new campus. The plans envision to relocate the students to different school buildings on Krounebierg and in rue des Près.

Construction work is scheduled to begin net year. Malherbe commented:

"It will be a challenge, since the soil will need to be dug up at least six or seven meters to make room for the swimming pool and the gymnasium. We have received criticism for the centralised location, but considering where the daycare and the kindergarten are, it makes most sense, since children are now able to get around on foot."

Construction work for the new campus is set to last for four years.
