The 82nd edition of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy’s annual multi-stage road cycling competition, kicks off on Tuesday. Several teams of elite riders are bound to fight for the title over five stages, the last of which will take place on 17 September.
In light of the event, the police have issued a statement to outline their responsibilities and remind motorists of how to drive responsibly.
Ever since safety issues overshadowed the 2020 Tour and even led to a mid-race strike by participants, organisers have been cautious to ensure safe parameters for their riders. Police therefore accompany riders on those stretches where bicycles are usually prohibited. Similarly, it is the responsibility of police to stop oncoming traffic in due time.
People are thus advised to consult the official website of the Tour de Luxembourg as to not miss out on the locations and dates of the respective road closures.
In case motorists still get caught in the midst of the race, they are required to follow the instructions of police officers on location, which, during the race, outweigh the road traffic act. In case of doubt, drivers should station their vehicles with blinking lights until they see the final race car signal the end of the peloton with a green flag.
Motorists should also be aware that it is prohibited to reverse or continue driving while being in between cyclists.
