Three stolen this yearPolice issue warning for keyless car owners

RTL Today
Three keyless cars have been stolen this year alone, with a further 14 car break-ins.

The police have issued a warning for owners of keyless cars. This year alone, three Range Rovers have been stolen and there have been three further unsuccessful attempts. 14 cars were broken into over the last two weeks. The culprits stole airbags and sat navs.

The reason for the police’s warning is the fact that it is rather easy to steal a keyless car. All that is needed is for two people to be in the proximity of both the key and car, and simple electronic devices that can transfer the signal from one to the other.

One of the thieves has to be close to the key to catch and transfer the signal, the other one has to remain right by the car. That way, they are able to both open and start the car and drive around until the tank is empty or contact is interrupted.

In an effort to avoid further cases, the police have released several tips for keyless car owners, who are strongly urged to park their cars in a garage or, where this is not possible, to not leave the car right outside their house. Keys should not be left close to the entrance door and should ideally be stored in a special safe that makes it impossible for the signal to be transmitted.

Unfortunately, neither insurance providers nor car manufacturers show intentions of improving the security features of keyless cars, which require very little effort to be stolen.
