
The post office moved on Monday, having been replace by a 'postal point' with more flexible opening hours. This postal point is now located a kilometre away from the town centre.
According to mayor Jacques Sitz, the municipal administration is not pleased with the development, as it would mean fewer people visit Remich.
Post cited the example of Frisange as a successful counterexample, pointing out that 180 postal operations a day take place at a petrol station in Frisange. Post views the new strategy as a clear success, although it remains unclear just how many branches they want to keep open.
In response to criticism surrounding the impending closures of a number of post offices, Post's management pointed out that replacing post offices with postal points in petrol stations and shopping centres has a number of benefits for customers.
Marketing and communications director Luc Welter explained that now, Post has 113 sales points, exactly as many as five years ago - when post offices began closing. However, a clear difference can be found in the opening hours, which have increased by 50% over the entire post network.
Post's management pointed out that they want to adapt to new needs, such as free parking spots and longer opening hours. These were judged as more important than a postal presence in villages.
