New details have emerged regarding the fire that broke out at the Goodyear tyre production site in Colmar-Berg on Monday.
According to Robert Fornieri of the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB), the fire originated at a technical mixing plant. As the site houses multiple mixing plants, allowing production to resume soon.
Fornieri, speaking as an employee representative, confirmed that the tyre factory remains shut down, along with some offices and research facilities. The Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM) is currently on site to assess whether the company is meeting safety regulations and can safely restart production in the coming hours.
Goodyear employs approximately 1,600 workers for tyre production and an additional 1,500 in research and administration. On Monday, management halted production as a precautionary measure to ensure employee safety.
Currently, around 100 employees are on site preparing for the resumption of operations. Those who worked in the immediate vicinity of where the fire started have been instructed to stay home, while others are working remotely, Fornieri added.
