On 20 March, the Red Cross raised concerns over its reduced stock for blood donations and launched an appeal to encourage new and existing donors to apply. Over two weeks, until 2 April, no fewer than 1,786 people came forward to donate blood for the first time - a record in the Luxembourg Red Cross' history.

The Red Cross confirmed the numbers on Friday, stating they'd received more new donors in those two weeks than over the course of 12 months. Blood donation was considered an essential reason for leaving the home during confinement.

Their current challenge is to go the distance, calling March's appeal a sprint compared to the marathon which faces them now. It is counterproductive for hospitals to have too much stock, as certain blood products have a short shelf life.

Donors are still needed to continue mobilisation.
