Luxembourg crossed the symbolic threshold in 2018 according to calculations made by the Luxembourg Institute of Regulation (ILR). 10.4% of the electricity consumed in the Grand Duchy last year stemmed from renewable sources.
The 14% increase over the previous year marked a significant step towards attaining Luxembourg's stated aim of having renewable energy make up 11% of total consumption by 2020. In 2017, the figure had only reached 6.38%, leaving the Grand Duchy lagging behind other, more advanced European countries in this area.
On another note, the ILR noted that tariffs which apply to households had increased, by 5% for electricity and 6% for gas. They attributed this in part to the fact that consumers rarely change energy suppliers, calling it passivity on consumers' part and a lack of dynamic innovation on the part of suppliers.
In addition, Luxembourgers are not numerous in producing their own energy through the installation of production means.
