Between Saturday 13 July and Sunday 21 July, no trains will be running between Bettembourg and Luxembourg City. CFL are closing the railway in order to further the engineering works involved in doubling the rail line.

The train lines 60 and 90 are among the most used railways in Luxembourg, with the closure causing issues for thousands of commuters and travellers. Thankfully, solutions are available for passengers needing to reach the capital.

BY CAR

A number of commuters will have to depend on car travel to get to work next week. A logical solution, but travellers will require some adjustments to not get caught up in the traffic jams which surround the capital each day. If possible, travellers are advised to avoid the rush hour (7-9am and 5-7pm) where they can.

The app Copilote can also be of use in finding a companion or driver to share the journey with, reducing the number of vehicles on the road. It is up to the driver to apply a fee or offer the trip for free, with it costing around €2 to travel between Esch-sur-Alzette, or Thionville.

BY RAIL REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE

Once passengers disembark at Bettembourg, a rail replacement bus service will be at their disposition. These will travel via the A3 motorway to reach Luxembourg City station, with the journey estimated to take between 20 or 25 minutes, depending on whether the bus stops at Berchem. Journeys are expected to take longer in rush hour.

Other replacement buses are planned at Thionville (journey time around 45 minutes) and Esch-sur-Alzette (journey time around 30 minutes, according to CFL.

Train timetables are available below:
Line 60, Rodange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg
Line 60a, between Volmerange and Luxembourg
Line 90, Nancy-Metz-Thionville-Luxembourg

BY BIKE

Bike-lovers may be inclined to make use of the Grand Duchy's many cycle paths to head to work. The map of paths is updated by the government and is available here.

Please note that bikes can be transported on rail replacement buses, provided there is sufficient space.
